This is the second government shutdown of my career. I had faith in our systems and our leaders leading up to the first one. This time, I’d thought that they had learned their lesson. Apparently not.
Now, we have each side blaming the other. Frankly, I don’t care who is at fault. I blame all of them, and all that complain. This country of ours isn’t working. It hurts me to say that. I’ve dedicated my entire life to the service of this country. I’ve sacrificed a lot in that service. To see us becoming what we are today hurts.
Our country is so divided and unable to compromise on the most essential, commonsense issues. Instead of compromising and listening to the other side…our leaders dig in their heels, call a press conference and blame the other guy. When in fact, it’s your fault senator, your fault congressman, your fault Mr. President! Your inability to work with each other, FOR THE PEOPLE WHO ELECTED YOU, is what got us here.
I work with people everyday who have different beliefs. I fully understand that there are some things that people won’t compromise. But there is always something! I have worked with ranchers who hate prairie dogs, horseback riders who hate ATV’s, people who hate logging…each time I’ve met with them, I always looked for something where we agreed first. Then built our compromise from there.
I haven’t had the opportunity to debate immigration or welfare or gun control or any of the issues that our leaders are debating. But I challenge them to forget about themselves and the special interests that funded their campaigns. I challenge them to reach across party lines and talk to each other in a real way. Be honest, be understanding, show us that the country I have served and fought for isn’t as broken as you’re making it look.
PS. One good thing about the government shutdown though…I’ll probably have some time to take photos. Here’s a few that I took during the last one.
